Huge escalation overnight as Russian launched three rounds of attacks in Kyiv over a 24 hr span.

Meanwhile the FIRST EVER barrage of strikes happened in Moscow.

In the early morning hours, the experience of those in Moscow mirrored that of people in Kyiv for the first time: explosions, air defense firing, and general chaos among the civilian population.
From videos and photos now being shared widely on Russian and Ukrainian social media, the damage inflicted by the attacks are not severe. But there are obvious psychological impacts from the attacks — it’s a signal that the war can and will reach the residents of Moscow as well.

While the Ukrainian government has not claimed responsibility, the attacks in Russia come immediately after the head of GUR, the military intelligence arm of the Ukrainian government, promised retribution for the constant attacks on Kyiv.

Russia launched an unusual daytime attack against Kyiv Monday, just hours after Ukraine claimed it intercepted a barrage of strikes on the capital and other parts of the country overnight. Kyiv military officials said the daytime raid shows Moscow has "changed its tactics" from night attacks to target civilians.

CNN
The governor of the Moscow Region, Andrey Vorobyov, confirmed the attacks on his official Telegram channel:
And this from the mayor of Moscow, who said in a subsequent post that two people sustained minor injuries:

The strikes in Moscow are sure to exacerbate divisions already within Russian society about the execution of the war.

The head of the Russian mercenary outfit Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, issued a furious, epithet-laden video cursing out the Russian Ministry of Defense:

We weren't planning on publishing an issue of The Counteroffensive today.

But the development and escalations were so dramatic that Ross and I quickly filmed a ten minute update of the overnight developments, and pushed out a special edition in the early AM.

It's a bit of an experiment, the first paid post we have had on http://Counteroffensive.news -- a NEWSFLASH urgent update for our paid subscribers.

Our paid posts are rare — but a rule we’ve set is that if we faced violent risk to write it, we would like to get paid for it!

Meanwhile, Kyiv residents awoke groggily after the third series of major strikes in a 24 hour period – an obvious escalation in the tempo of attacks on the capital city.

There were attacks yesterday morning in central Kyiv, then another in the afternoon, and again overnight

Ross and I both awoke around 2 am to the sound of Ukrainian air defense working. I heard him moving around the apartment and we stood for a minute watching. Like much of Kyiv, we were unhappy to have been awoken by the explosions and vibrations and waves of concussive force.
Everyone in Kyiv has been talking about how little sleep they're getting:
Others are just telling jokes, with a dash of dark humor:

Ukrainians have begun calling the drones ‘scooters,’ for the buzzing sound they make as they fly through the city. The bangs we heard were unmistakably the sounds of air defense working.

It sounded like an active firefight -- here's the audio of it:

The strikes and explosions occurred over a period of nearly two hours, continuing until the sun began to rise at around 4 a.m.

I eventually fell back to sleep in an interior room with walls on all sides.

The British Ambassador to Ukraine shared her coping mechanism for airstrikes over night: retaliatory strikes on the boxing heavy bag.
These escalations – both on the Ukrainian and Russian sides – make it feel like something big is about to happen.

In his overnight address Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hinted that the timing of the much-anticipated counteroffensive has already been set – but gave no more clues.

“The decisions have been made,” Zelenskyy said.

We’ll be watching closely.

@timkmak Yikes, please don't consider paid subscriptions an incentive to suicidal missions, ok?
@katzenberger quite the opposite. We take very measured risks but when we do we are hoping people will see that we are doing that for the story, and pay to read the product
@timkmak Good to hear - I hope you and the people working with you stay safe, at all times.
@katzenberger nothing more important to me
