@kallekn

@janvhei Ganska vanlig synpunkt i ryska statliga medier.

@kallekn

It ain't working.

@kallekn

You should stop digging when you hit shit, var det nån som sa åt mig en gång.

@janvhei @kallekn If you read Orwell's 1984, they had daily "five minutes of hatred" there. This is what we have on TV except all major channels have one or two hours of this.

It is not stupid. It conditions people and makes Putin himself look less radical.

It does work. Not for everyone of course but imagine average people getting daily dose of such propaganda for years now.

@shuro @kallekn

Yes, I understand the situation is as you (and Kalle) describe it. It is horrible and it works.

My point was that only an idiot (an idiot as in an emotional expression of lack of wisdom, rather than an estimate if his capabilities) will put himself in a position which is diametrically opposite of the position where he would like to be.

@janvhei @kallekn He is old and this is the way he operates.

Again it is not really stupid, it worked for him for years. If he decided to quit ten years ago he probably would went into history as rather successful (even though oppressive) politician.

His (and whoever is behind him) problem was that he wouldn't and instead of recognizing failure he decided to go for whatever it took to stay in power and eliminate competition.

This is the result. Something like this was inevitable. To be honest I even suspect he received a little push.

@shuro @janvhei Who is behind him?

@janvhei @kallekn I have no idea but I don't think it is just him.

He popped out of somewhere when Eltsin retired and it clearly was like he was put in this position, not grabbed it himself. I suppose some sort of KGB/FSB community?

It is not like I am talking about some kind of deep state but it is not like he is a single madman who usurped all power and no one can do anything about it.

FSB and some other enforcement structures surely gained a lot under his rule. Way too much to justify just keeping the order. So I suppose those are his real supporters.

@shuro @janvhei True enough. His inner circle. The collective Putin. Bortnikov. Patrushev. Kovalchuk. Stuff like that. But ultimately it was Yeltsin who put him in this position, after auditioning a couple of other possible successor candidates, so I don't think there is anyone today who he could be seen as being "behind" him, or above him. He is on top of the pyramid of loyalities.
