The Meta Annual General Meeting is on 31 May, 2023. For days leading up to the meeting, we’re sharing 7 reasons to vote yes on Proposal 7, a shareholder proposal dealing with allegations of bias in Meta’s operations in India. #7ReasonsForProposal7 1/
In 2020, @szhang_ds blew the whistle on Facebook’s failures to take action on fake engagement impacting political outcomes worldwide, including India. She offered to testify before the Lok Sabha, but was prevented from doing so on the grounds that foreign nationals cannot testify before the Parliament. 2/

In June 2022, she made publicly available documents that she would have provided to the Lok Sabha in her testimony. IFF wrote to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications & IT, sharing these documents with them. 3/

The disclosures reveal that @szhang_ds uncovered five inauthentic networks operating in India and driving fake engagement. Two were found to be related to the BJP, two to the INC, and one to AAP. Four of these networks were taken down.

However, one network, connected to BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar, was not taken down, despite repeated requests to two other threat investigators and a Facebook India public policy manager. 4/

We’re asking Meta shareholders to stand up for Indian democracy. Profit cannot come before people & to vote no on Proposal 7 is to be complicit in the human rights abuses that arise out of biases in Meta’s operations in India. #VoteForABetterMeta 5/5
