I canNOT believe this but the woman making the program for my grandpa's memorial services couldn't find the poem that had been picked for the beginning and asked some LLM (I don't know what platform it was very confusing) to write the poem based on her vague memory of some lines of it and that's what she read and said was my grandpa's favorite

I'm honestly like, hysterically laughing about it and also hurt and horrified. What a time to be alive

Thanks for the kind responses on this - my grandpa would have enjoyed the fact that this story got an audience. He loved human writing and often said things like everyone should try to write a book (he was always expectantly asking me about the fact that I haven't published one when my mom and wife both have 😂 ). In his study were well-worn and open books of Hebrew and Hawaiian languages which he was still working on at 97. He had an incredible mind.
@grimalkina Thank you for sharing that! As they say, may his memory be a blessing.
@grimalkina O_O I am so sorry.
@natematias I deeply believe he would have thought it was absolutely hilarious so it is more ok than it could feel I guess??? He was a psychiatrist and he would have loved talking about how people use things like this. He was very unbothered

@grimalkina @natematias

i just thought there might be some therapeutic cases where the use of a LLM might be useful and beneficial, especially in psychotherapy.

haven't ever thought about that.

🤔

@mad

I think that before you suggest the use of AI in therapy you should talk to some therapists about the ethical implications.

The experiments that have been done see #AITherapy have not been ethical or safe and some have ended in patient death.

@Homebrewandhacking

many thanks for the advice, no objections at all.

👍

(p.s. did i suggest?)

@grimalkina what the actual hell?
Also … astonishing how quickly this stuff has infiltrated mainstream human activities 🤯
@Andrewhinton Lord knows what the process was but she said she "asked Siri" and this is what Siri recommended doing, but I don't trust any of the accounting of it because people use the wrong brand names for everything etc
@grimalkina kinda darkly hilarious if one “AI” is shilling for another “AI” tho
@grimalkina like that’s not even easier than just asking someone to resend the original!

@grimalkina

😮

I'm sorry to hear this...

The level of inapproriate is off the charts.

@grimalkina I'm hoping this isn't a story written by an LLM asked for cautionary tales about the use of LLMs.
@grimalkina that is so awful, I'm sorry. I jokingly asked ChatGPT to generate a eulogy for me and it was awful and generic. I'm sorry that people are running with this shit like it has the same effect of language that moved the people close to you.
@grimalkina omg wth 😳 how do we keep finding so many ways to hurt ourselves with tech 🥴
@grimalkina I'm really hoping this woman just went online and accidentally hit the Bard button on Bing or something and entered what she knew thinking she was looking it up but instead prompted it to write a new one...? This is like, Three's Company Level of WTF.
@nypinta
Lolol that's the best line I've heard today.
@grimalkina
@grimalkina Hopefully your grandfather had a sense of humor. I'm sorry that happened, though.
@grimalkina
I hope you got some LLM to make up her banking details for the payment

@grimalkina

Redefining 'poetic license,' UGH. What kind of person would do such a thing? You are clearly blessed with a good sense of humor, I bet your grandpa would have laughed about this, too, but, sheesh. The nerve!

@grimalkina
Damn, Cat, that’s a lot to sift through, stifle, sublimate, rage at. Kinda funny though too, as you say. Be well.

@grimalkina “by a wild coincidence, I ran your memorial services invoice through a LLM and it says I only need to pay half of it!” 😂

Sorry that happened to you. I also appreciate that you said your grandfather would have found it funny so…man, wild that someone doing a memorial service would think that was ok. 🤯

@grimalkina I work in tech, and my coworkers ask gpt3.5 questions constantly. I keep saying they shouldn't ask it anything they can't verify because it lies / hallucinates, but they don't care.

Can't wait for ai-generated rumors to rip society apart. Can't imagine the "telephone" aspect of humans repeating things will do anything but make the rumors more believable etc

Greatest peacetime weapon

@grimalkina
Had to read this like 3 times. Then scrape my jaw off the ground. I... I... I got nothin.

I thought it was bad when a relative photoshopped a haircut on her mother for her funeral program, as if no other pictures existed of the woman.

@grimalkina sorry to hear that, really hope you can figure out what it was so we could have a "nailed it" style comparison.

"There's two roads in a forest and I took the one with less people on it."

@grimalkina

That’s unfathomable.

Hurt and horrified is a rational response. I’m sorry that your family had to experience such a moral and ethical vacuum.

Where in the world did this happen?

@grimalkina I want to commiserate but also kind of hope this happens when I die.
@grimalkina I was a reference librarian. That would have been a call in with a quick response. I am sorry about this during a difficult time.
