@yurnidiot I avoid anything that would require typing on my phone at all costs.

But also option 1, lol

@drogyn1701 i'm a swiper myself and tap to correct. dictate rarely for some reason.
@yurnidiot I tap when I have both thumbs available and swipe when I only have one.
@KelsonV interesting. do you find one method faster than the other or about the same?

@yurnidiot These days I find that two-thumb tapping is usually faster and more accurate for me than swiping. And of course it works better for less common words (though auto-correct is still....not always right). When I first got a touch screen phone back in the early bronze ages, swiping was a lot faster.

I'm not sure if I've just gotten used to it, or if the screen keyboards are really that much better than they used to be.

@yurnidiot The funny thing is that I wasn't actually sure which I do more when I saw the poll! It's just so automatic by now! I had to start a reply and watch what I was doing!
@KelsonV the larger tap targets on bigger phones today prb help with the tap typing compared to like an iphone5 or older
@yurnidiot I never could get the hang of swiping, especially not on Thursdays.
@mansr what happens on Thursday??
@yurnidiot mostly swiping with a bit of tapping. Sometimes the swiping just won't give me the right word and I resort to tapping. Or it's a non-dictionary word that's not in my personal dictionary either.
@yurnidiot @beecycling Same, too. But in the car I dictate using Android Auto, when it's necessary.
@thewhite969 @yurnidiot Have to say I very rarely dictate, even if I'm alone. I feel weird talking at the phone.
@yurnidiot I use Braille input, mostly, occasional dictation. Blind iPhone user.
@wx1g i should've included Braille as one of the options 🤦‍♂️
@yurnidiot Maybe you didn't know about it? Many IOS users don't know it's an option. I think Braille input is also available on Android?
@yurnidiot if only you were allowed to add more than 4 options for polls.
@yurnidiot @wx1g and speech, since that is also a way to type

@yurnidiot

Combo tap and swipe

I use TypeWise as my keyboard, so tapping enters the letter, and swiping up capitalizes it. Swiping left backspaces, etc.

The only thing I don't like is it doesn't react to number entry fields by flipping to numbers, like the default iOS keyboard does. I have autocorrupt enabled, and undoing it is also a swipe, so it doesn't tend to get too annoying.

@vor I'll check it out when i get a chance
@yurnidiot I use Braille Screen input on my iPhone, which is a method of typing supported in the VoiceOver screen reader.
@yurnidiot tap for letters, swipe for accents
@yurnidiot I regularly forget that I can swipe type 😅
@yurnidiot Other (Braille Screen Input with the VoiceOver screen reader).
@yurnidiot you young people, sigh. I tap with one finger. Boomer shame
@princelysum no shame. there's no wrong way to type
@yurnidiot I tend to dictate the first draft and then use tap typing to fix it. Or if it's a shorter message just the tap typing. But I can't pick just one and be accurate.
@yurnidiot I used to try swipe typing, but I then changed the virtual keyboard I used to something that wasn't owned by big tech, so now I can only use tap typing.
@the1goit swiping is built into ios. is it not available on stock android?
@yurnidiot the keyboard on stock android is GBoard, owned by google and has swiping, but I switched to OpenBoard, cause on android, you can change the keyboard you use.
@yurnidiot also, iOS copied it from android phones.

@yurnidiot I voted tap type ... If that what you call it when thumbs madly look for the right letter ... I'm sure they keep moving them on purpose ... Giggles

Hugz & xXx

@yurnidiot @DaNanner I do both but I’m not sure which I use more. I think I use one until I (it) makes a mistake and then I’ll switch to the other. I need to pay more attention.
@yurnidiot I really loved swipe typing but as far as I know there is still no open source swipe keyboard app.
@yurnidiot
Swipe never been much of a fan... but my experience from a Samsung foldable:

"Sour is a transfer rubbing method of composting a mate"
translation
"Swipe is a garbage typing method for composing a message"

swipe
no, just no
swipe
not even remotely close
swipe
I will never need most of those words. Not ever.
swipe
what language even is that?
swipe
omg! embarrassing no!
swipe
sigh
.....
........
ok, I can do a 140wpm email from my desktop, what even is this dumb as shit 25 trash words a minute tech 'advance'
.... fuck it I'll call them.
@ArtBear oof sounds rough. might be a samsung thing, cuz ios swipe isn't too bad.
@yurnidiot tapping. no ones swipes. only aliens.
@macsnider i will destroy your planet for such comments puny earthling
@yurnidiot Depends on the language - not all support swiping (例えば日本語…逆に手書き認識、テンキーなどが楽にできる)
@yurnidiot I use an alternate keyboard called 8vim, which is a very different input method than most on-screen keyboards.
@jmelesky that is wild. looks like steep learning curve. and android only
@yurnidiot Learning curve isn’t that bad, actually–once you get the “drag from the center to a quadrant, around, back to center” concept, the rest is very discoverable. And I do type fairly fast and without autocorrect.
@yurnidiot All three with about equal frequency, sometimes switching in the middle of one sentence.
@ehurtley may be considered a talent in some circles
@yurnidiot I was today years old when I read this thread and discovered there's a thing called swipe typing ... and just a few minutes after that when I watched a video and determined that it would be a disaster for me in terms of accuracy. Maybe I'll give it a whirl the next time I get repetitive-stress pain from my both-thumbs tap-typing routine 😸
@dkozlov give it a try. it might be more accurate than you think (at least on ios). i surprises me sometimes how well it does
@yurnidiot one finger like an i cant type on qwerty newb
@liseo we were all newbs at some point. don't give up!
@yurnidiot
Stereotyping
@ipd may get you in trouble if not careful 😆
@yurnidiot
I'm familiar with filet of sole.
Evan if I can type with both hands at once.
@yurnidiot I suggest you re-run allowing multiple choices. I use all three and I bet that’s not weird at all.
@timbray quite a few people do all 3 i'm discovering, depending on the context. you can pick your go-to method or fave if that helps?
@yurnidiot Yeah, it totally depends; if I’m alone in the room or in the car I’ll dictate. If it’s a really obvious note “Yes that time is good”, "will you be home for dinner" I tap and go with the autocomplete flow. If I actually need to compose something nontrivial I swipe. Honestly wouldn’t know which is most often.
@yurnidiot I’m trilingual and only two of the three languages I type in daily have swipe support on iOS, so even though swipe is more convenient to me I end up tapping because it’s consistent.
@chudesnov i'm discovering swipe is more limited for non-english speakers
