@lustlion Oh wow, you are second one. ^^ I should have included it in the poll. 😅
@sigmasternchen I speak Greek (it's my main language) as well as English.
@[email protected] Shoot, I forgot Greek. 😅 I wanted to add all the ones I knew about directly in the poll.
@getimiskon @sigmasternchen I am learning Greek. Μαθαίνω Ελληνικά.
@sigmasternchen greek, and english, learning german
@sigmasternchen Something else=American Sign Language—my second most fluent language.
@blbc Uh, interesting. I didn’t think of that.
@remi Second conlang in the comments. ^^
@sigmasternchen
apart from German, English, Spanish, Swedish and French, i also know a bit of Italian, and am learning Austrian Sign Language currently. I think that's all 🤔
@pascoda That’s a lot! 😮
Is Austrian sign language different from the German one?

@sigmasternchen
yes it is quite a lot xD

German is my first language; English I started to learn at age 10 in school, French at age 15. Italian and Spanish followed at 19 (for 2 years). Swedish I've only learned through Duolingo.

I also use Duolingo to keep up my French, Spanish and Italian skills, English I use enough throughout conferences, and various media.

@sigmasternchen
pretty much _every_ country has their own sign language.
they all are natural languages, developed similar to spoken natural languages.
Sign Language similarities do not adhere to borders/commonalities across spoken languages, though - rather, they depict political borders from the 18th century or so.
German SL and Austrian SL, for example, are actually rather different from each other.
Austrian and Hungarian SL, on the other side are rather similar.

@sigmasternchen
finally, the differences are afaik not about grammar as in sentence structure.
it's more about what meanings a sign has, how important or intense body language, facial expressions, mouthing, etc are.
if you watch e.g. US American SL vs Austrian SL, you can see that there's lots of finger-spelling in USA, and facial expressions are more important in Austrian SL.

⚠️ If you're interested in learning to sign, find a Deaf person/institution & pay for lessons 😘

@sigmasternchen English, and currently learning Japanese.
@sigmasternchen
English (native)
Spanish (rusty)
Thai (a bit)
Vietnamese (learning)
@sigmasternchen Mi parolas esperanta, norvegia kaj angla.
@sigmasternchen
Pretty much just this one, as long as you discount programming languages and stuff like binary ASCII English...
@sigmasternchen
(The poll isn't showing up for me for some reason)
@dheadshot Might be a Mastodon thing. Or just a problem with the app.
@dheadshot Are there any languages you would like to learn?
@sigmasternchen I tried learning Welsh in the past...
@dheadshot But you didn't like it?
@sigmasternchen Couldn't get my head working great with it. I guess human languages aren't really something I'm good at...
@sigmasternchen Esperanto! And learning German, Japanese and French Sign Language
@melunaka Seems to be quite popular. I've seen 3 people so far. ^^
@sigmasternchen so what you mean is what is one OTHER language besides English you speak …
@Tho99 The idea was to check all languages you speak. And if English was missing, the people who only speak one language would not be represented.
(Also it's easier if I don't have to calculate the total but can just read it from the data directly. ^^)
@sigmasternchen sorry, I phrased that badly. What I meant was to /understand/ the poll you need to speak (some) English. An eg Italian only speaker might not read it, because they don’t understand it.
@Tho99 I got that. ^^
But if there was no option for English, people who only speak English would not have been represented. I could have added a "No other languages" option, but I think this way was cleaner. ^^
