Very excited about this new Colorado special interest license plate design. Look at that dino!
@andrew I am suddenly trying to figure out if I can register my car in Colorado…
@joshourisman You may not want to once you see the registration fees!
@andrew @joshourisman it can’t be worse than CA, can it? Can it?
@noname @joshourisman Oh, it absolutely can - it's based on the vehicle's value and age. My new camper van was over $1,000 in registration fees alone.
@andrew @joshourisman ouch, but also IDK how much that'd be in CA. I think CA also adjusts fees based on vehicle age and value. https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/car-registration-fees-by-state doesn't show CO citing that fees depend on *weight*. CA is in the upper half, but $64 seems too low, I pay $200+ for sure, but have to take a look at the break-down.
Car Registration Fees by State 2023

@andrew @joshourisman registration fee is indeed $65, but there’s a bunch of of other fees that bump the cost of renewal to $320-$450 range for my cars 😅 License fee is %0.65 of the value of the car. There must be some other rated fee b/c my combined registration fee for Mustang comes $50 more than for Infiniti SUV, but DMV doesn’t do the breakdown of fees unless the registration is due for renewal. I will for sure check it out when it’s due to compare.
@andrew @joshourisman well, I can't wait that long. Went down the rabbit hole of getting all the DMV fees. There's A LOT of them https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/registration-fees/ As I thought, "Transportation Improvement Fee" is rated and depends on the value of the car: it's $59 for the SUV (less than $25K value) and $119 for the Mustang (less than $35K).
Registration Fees - California DMV

There are a variety of fees that may be required when applying for or renewing vehicle registration.

California DMV
@noname @andrew it’s been almost 20 years since I had a car registered in California, and this all just seems crazy compared to the other states in which I’ve registered cars. (Minnesota, Illinois, Massachusetts, DC, Maryland, and New Mexico).
