People think to themselves, “I don’t live in Mississippi, or I’m not trans, how is this hate relevant to me?” I am writing from Canada, where school boards across our country are being disrupted by bigotry. All of us should condemn transphobia. What’s happening in schools is a microcosm of society. Pay attention. Stand up as an ally, wherever you are. #TransRightsAreHumanRights https://www.mississippifreepress.org/33223/trans-girl-sues-over-order-to-dress-as-boy-at-harrison-county-graduation
School Can Force Trans Girl to Dress As Boy At Graduation, Judge Rules

The family of a 17-year-old transgender Harrison Central High School senior is suing after officials told her she must dress as a boy at graduation.

@nilikm we have a hateful candidate who won here because she ran on “I’m just a grandma.” And no one in the media looked too deep. And we have a hateful counsellor who has made it her mission to get rid of the pride flag everywhere. She made a post about it handling at our local high school stating flag protocol which was bullshit. Then took the post down when the school was called and threatened. And people had the nerve to use her religion as an excuse for her bigotry. 😡🤬

@nilikm If you're a cis person who doesn't give a shit about the lives and well-being of trans people (and let's face it, most cis people don't), and need a purely selfish reason to even lift a finger in our defense, consider this:

It never ends with just us. We're the canary in the coal mine, the test group that genocidal bigots give their hatred a preliminary run on to see if they can get away with it. Once they normalize killing us off, they immediately widen their scope to more groups, which I guarantee will include you and/or people you love.

So fight for us together, or become isolated and alone once we're gone.

@TrashkittenDeluxe I am a cis woman who provides primary health care to my family medicine trans patients and as a school board trustee I advocate for trans rights. And as a Jewish woman, I’m well aware that racism, antisemitism, transphobia, and other forms of hate are linked. We stand up for each other, or we all suffer.
@TrashkittenDeluxe @nilikm well I’ll meet you halfway, I selfishly want to live in a country where nobody is bullied or persecuted just for living their lives.

@nilikm

It *starts* with school boards (and churches). Be careful, Canada, or you'll end up like us down here in the USA.

@nilikm And this trans girl opted to not attend her own graduation, according to an article in today's Jackson, MS Clarion Ledger. Very sad.

We live in a society where people in power and authority can now bully people with impunity.

@ken1951roberts @nilikm That’s incredibly sad. Why are some many people just complete assholes when it comes to showing any compassion for fellow human beings.

@ken1951roberts @nilikm

She opted not to do so because a Trump appointed judge said she had to attend the ceremony dressed as a boy, despite having lived as herself - a girl - for many years. Including showing up for school each day.

@nilikm you need to see this North Carolina article about not prosecuting these jackholes too, which only enables them to get more radical and dangerous. From @ProPublica https://www.propublica.org/article/winston-salem-nc-school-board-arrests
He Became Convinced the School Board Was Pushing “Transgender Bullshit.” He Ended Up Arrested — and Emboldened.

Eric Jensen, a parent in North Carolina, had grievances to air about library books “trying to convert kids to gay,” and about mask and vaccine mandates. So he joined an activist group and headed to a school board meeting.

@nilikm

One point I don't think gets emphasized enough is how much having governments pass laws targeting trans people like this inflames the transphobic bigots into a state of feeling like they should harass trans people. The bigots will try to add to the pressure.
