I'm hooking up the new outworld for my Camponotus pennslyvanicus colony today-- I did a trial hook up for like 3 seconds and already 3 of them got into the new space. Husband wanted to watch them explore so 3 are currently trapped until I re-hook the nest.

You might think the restricted access would make them wary... knowing this colony, they'll be even more excited to get in!

There is a choice hiding space in this new area... I just hope they don't hang out in the connecting tube.

Every colony has a personality.

My pogos are chill and dependable.

My cone ants are little spazzes who freak out over every little thing.

The nicos are shy and stratigic.

And the pennslyvanicus? They are devious, sneaky, bodacious, goofy and endlessly looking for more space and more things to explore. So they get the new outworld.

@futurebird this should help their Communist Inclinations:

@futurebird.
I noticed that back even when had 5 colonies in little vials. Very diff paeronaalities.

I wonder if we can develop field psychology tests to key out to spp without having to still them and use lenses!

.

@futurebird
now keep 5 colonies of SAME spp and see if detect personalities!

Reminds me of wondering abt colonyevel sellection in honebees bases on nest structure as heritable trait

I think the girls really like their new outworld. More places to explore and do ant stuff. #antvideo #nosound #camponotus

happy ants enjoying their new outworld.

@futurebird Would they be “surprised” if the tube were connected to a different outworld? That is, do they have a strong spatial/geographic sense?

@michaelgemar

Absolutely! If I move the tubes around it causes a whole controversy and commotion. They get very excited hoping it is something new. But then when they find something new they are (at first) very cautious.

@futurebird It is fascinating to me the degree to which these creatures seem to have emotions, at least collectively. And I always enjoy your insights, especially how empathetic you are towards the subjects.
