This, from @profmusgrave, has pretty much been my experience the past two years of teaching, and we have to respond as instructors & institutions.

The Post Generation

It's not the culture wars, it's the culture shifts

Systematic Hatreds
@profmusgrave's point about religious awareness hits hard, too. I am considering doing a version of our data journalism class that's focused on religion, but I would need to add a LOT of context. And maybe they wouldn't care much either way?

I taught in NH for 9 years, and Musgrave's description of student temperament overlaps with my experience there. Since moving to the Midwest 2 yrs ago for a new teaching gig, I've seen much less cynicism in this part of the country. It wd be unthinkable for a student here to tell me that they expected an A from my course because it's a gen ed. Regional differences (culture and COL) likely play a role. But yes, unfamiliarity with traditional news outlets is universal.
