The overheated register in which Silicon Valley types have tended to talk about Twitter is how they always talk about whatever they are selling, right before they move on to selling something else.

@JamesGleick Question fedefal regulators are looking at is Musk's misuse of Blue Checkmark. People are supposed to pay for service but Musk gives it away to many people, especially celebrities. Regulators want to see numbers, meaning if subscribes don't match subscription revenue. This is illegal. We'll see.

@JamesGleick
I'm not missing twitter.

@JamesGleick

I was looking at some #twitter threads for the first time in ages the other day.

For pretty much every blue tick my reaction was "who the f*** are you?"

A lot of them had around 100-200 followers.

So they're verified what? Reply guy? Occasional blog writer?

As an ex-twitter reply guy I don't think anybody ever needed verification of my status.
