@bbhorne @julieofthespirits I think "burying" is perhaps an overreaction here. This is an end of mission statement it is not the report itself. Its like a "here's what we made note of".
> The final report on the visit will be presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council by latest in June 2024, after a process of dialogue with the State.
The ACTUAL report due next year will go into greater depth on the findings, statistical analysis, recommendations, best practices etc.
@tezoatlipoca @julieofthespirits they had scheduled a press conference to announce their findings, and then called it off. I'll find the exact text. In context, without a new press conference convened to announce the report, it seems like they bowed to government pressure to not make a big deal about it. The email reads: "Please note that we have cancelled the news conference tomorrow, in order to provide more time for engagement with the UK government in relation to the substantive findings of this fact-finding mission (country visit to the UK) by the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
We will be sure to keep you updated and send you the news release as soon as published, along with the Independent Expert’s preliminary observations, as soon as they are issued — most likely on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. He will also be available for interviews in relation to the findings once they are published.
Please feel free to stay in touch prior to then.
There will not be a news conference, yet an interview may be possible. Please find below the message I shared with other journalists, and let’s touch base next week." (They never did get back in touch)(not even to let us know about the publication of the report)
@bbhorne @julieofthespirits Fair enough. Again, not to defend the government, but the UN sometimes has to play overnice with host governments. If you drop a bombshell report that is incredibly critical of the host government you tend not to be invited back. And in this case if our mandate is to provide independent international objective assessment as to the plight of LGBT persons, not being invited back just adds more challenge to our goal.
(a few friends of mine do UN work and its tough)
