As much like REO Speedwagon as REM, Semisonic’s sophomore disc found its niche with college anthems like “Closing Time” and the emotive ballad “Secret Smile” – a song that can still raise tears on the wrong soggy afternoon. Minnesotans with most of the punk drained out, Semisonic rode the midstream between college rock cool and pop radio convention. It worked because of the songs.
