Up to 34% of transit users surveyed reported experiencing possible heat-related illnesses, and over half reported they stop riding the streetcar when temperatures exceeded 100°F. Users requested more shade at stops (30%), vegetation (26%), and materials that get less hot (26%).

Streetcar operators interviewed discussed how heat impacts their employees and the operation of streetcars. They acknowledged impacts on streetcar users, and discussed needing additional resources to address heat risk, particularly for vulnerable users such as the unhoused.

We hope the findings from this study can help improve the thermal comfort and safety of streetcar users and bring more attention to the impact of heat on public transportation.
