Vivek Ramaswamy's proposal to limit voting for those under 25 is an obvious attempt to skew elections in his party's favor. But it's also a reflection of the overlap between age and party that's downstream from the baby boom. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/11/long-shot-gop-candidate-wants-limit-voting-by-younger-americans/

Baby boomers, when they are in their teens: Teens should be allowed to vote!

Baby boomers, when they are retiring: Teens are too young to vote!

@pbump the new younger generation of boomers wanted the right to vote (and drink) because many were being drafted and sent to Viet Nam.
@pbump
Media loves to stereo-type boomers. You need to qualify----- it is magat boomers. If anyone took time to look outside of The Villages (even there some boomers are blue) and maga world, you would find a decent amount of decent minded oldsters.

@pbump @JudyOlo According to the article (which you wrote) it's not "boomers" per se, it's Republicans. Yes, I get that over half of boomers vote Republican (according to the article), but the other 40% aren't chopped liver.
@pbump Stereotyping and ageism rolled into one neat package to provoke intergenerational warfare...when the real enemies are the plutocrats and fascists in the "Republlican" party
@pbump Do you have evidence that baby boomers significantly changed their opinions on the 26th Amendment?

@pbump Wait a minute here. I'm a Baby Boomer...an African American one.

I'm a union baby & a civil rights baby.

My parents marched w Dr. King. My Mom's mother warned her that "Martin Luther King is going to get you killed." Coming from MS, she was justifiably frightened. But Mama said she had to do what she had to do.

Given there are so many who've died for Blacks to have the right to vote, voting long has been a sacred act in our family.

So, please, let up with the broad brush.

@SharonGibson3 did you read the article?
@pbump No. Honestly, I was referring to your statement alone. But this is not the first time I've read something denigrating Baby Boomers.
@pbump don’t go blaming a whole generation for one asshole. Many of us (boomers) find this proposal to be odious.
@pbump Ramaswamy's not a boomer.
@bobdrummond I am begging you to read the article
@pbump I did. Wouldn't comment without doing so. You started with Vivek and then tried a triple-bank-shot to ascribe his view to Republicans and from there to boomers -- apparently to finally arrive at the "boomers wanted young people to vote when they were young, but look at them now" quip. Lotta work for little real insight. We both know Republicans in various states are trying to limit voting by blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and, yes, young people -- any group that's not MAGA.
@pbump You correctly describe the GOP voter suppression campaign (and, btw, I'm an admirer of your work. First-rate). As someone born in the '50s and almost named for President Eisenhower, I just feel compelled to stick up for my generation.
@pbump Not all baby-boomers! <g>

@pbump hey! as a baby boomer that's an unfair generalization!

I still think teens should vote, and think we should do all we can to help them vote as soon as they can to get them in the habit.

#vote #democracy

@pbump I wonder if he would advocate for limiting older voters? Once retired, do you lose the “civic experience” edge? Can we trust that older voters are going to make “good” decisions?
@pbump Why insinuate that all baby boomers are GOP assholes?
@pbump I've read the article. As a 64 yr old lifelong Democrat & Boomer, I'm still offended by this generalization. It is generalized. It is ageist and, as usual, it lumps all Boomers into a single demographic, and we're not. Not even close.
@knitvspurl what if I told you I know a little bit about baby boomers
@pbump - I'd say, Great! Since you know everything about us, please name for me which influential Democrats favor raising the voting age to 25.
@pbump Or removing all polling places from college/university campuses. Or limiting early voting to old or sick people. Or any of a dozen other measures being employed by the GOP (per your OWN article) to limit voting by young people. And yet, you felt it important to generalize that it's just "Baby Boomers". It's not Boomers. It's the GOP, because they can't earn the votes of young people & still keep their base.
