"If anyone arrives at our southern border after midnight tonight they will be assumed ineligible for asylum" with the end of #Title42, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Congress has left a broken #mmigration system and left DHS without the resources it needs, according to Secretary Mayorkas.
"I want to be very clear: Our borders are not open," Secretary Mayorkas tells reporters at the White House.
"Do not risk your life and your life savings only to be removed from the United States if and when you arrive here," DHS Secretary Mayorkas says in message from the White House to potential migrants thinking of using smugglers to try to cross the border.
"We will deliver tougher consequences" to those who do not use legal pathways to enter the US, warns DHS Secretary Mayorkas.
More than 665,000 people removed from the US in the first half of the fiscal year, says DHS Secretary Mayorkas.
"We are going after the smugglers" with a law enforcement campaign, adds Mayorkas at the White House briefing room lectern.
Removal flights to countries such as Columbia, Peru and Ecuador being scaled up, according to Mayorkas.
"Congress has been unable to pass immigration reform that everyone agrees and understands is desperately needed," DHS Secretary Mayorkas tells White House reporters.
With 20 million people displaced in the Western Hemisphere the challenges are "no means unique to the southern border" of the US, notes Mayorkas.
"It is going to take a period of time for our approach to actually gain traction and show results," says DHS Secretary Mayorkas about the challenges to the "broken immigration system" amid the end of #Title42.
"I cannot overstate the strain on our personnel and our facilities," adds DHS Secretary Mayorkas.
"It is a both sad and tragic day when a government official uses migrants as pawns for political purposes," responds Mayorkas when asked about the #Texas governor sending a busload of people to the vice president's official residence in #DC today.
"We are seeing a global displacement of people" that's the largest since at least the end of WW2, says DHS Secretary Mayorkas at the White House, responding to VOA's Patsy Widakuswara.
