I certainly remember that my dad was rarely home before 20:00 when I was a kid.

My dad was nearly always home from 1 or 2 pm, had his office in the house.
He was still at his desk until 5 or 6, but he was there and available for urgent things.
The jobs I've had so far never started before 9 and I was nearly always home before 6 pm. Wouldn't want to miss mornings and evenings with my daughter.
And now that I am self employed with my office at home it is almost perfect.
