It is a clone of a game from the 80s called Puzznic that was on a multitude of systems from that era including some of the same systems Vexed was just released for. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puzznic

Another very nice Puzznic clone is Wizznic which is open source and available on Linux, FreeBSD, Haiku and other game systems. I played it first on my PSP.
