I am trying to be less cynical but I can’t help but point out that George Santos has been a very rich resource for the media, and that the incentives to catch a fraudster before they’re elected are not high enough when ‘missing’ something like Santos’s criminality leads to years of easy-to-write and popular-with-audiences material.

@ewisquith
He was outed as a scammer by a local paper before the election. At that point it wasn't a national story.

This district was jerry mandered, by Republicans, to be the local "isolate all the democrats here" throw away district. No other Rs were running. So this grifter filed as the only R & started collecting donations from rich Rs left in the district, never intending to win. Before the election, the new district boundaries were thrown out & it reverted to +60% R.

@ewisquith

He is literally a criminal scammer who said anything to make himself sound electable on local talk radio and to collect donations. And he filed fraudulent paperwork to pocket all those donations into living expenses for himself. Then the district borders flipped back and he got elected. He now has more scrutiny than he ever wanted. He has to lie and pretend to be a serious candidate to try and avoid going to jail. And the House Rs have to embrace him. 🤣
