This poll is for US residents only. For those from other countries, be thankful you don't have to be included in a poll like this.

Given the increased frequency of mass shootings, do you find yourself more aware of entrances/exits and places you might hide if a shooter entered the premises?
Boosts appreciated for a wider demographic.

@dancinyogi I voted no but I’ve always been hyper aware of my surroundings, including entrances/exits, because of social anxiety. Mass shootings just piled on another reason why I’m already aware.
@dancinyogi i am 45 years old and for the first time in my life, i walk in a place and think "this could be the last time" (Oklahoma)

@dancinyogi

I teach at a university. Every university teacher does this. We even had a training session on what to do if a shooter goes live on campus.

Think about that: it is now standard on-the-job training in American universities to be taught what to do if a shooter goes live on your campus.

@dancinyogi

I probably *should* be develop the habit of looking for safe routes/hiding places, but ... no. I haven't built that habit yet.

@dancinyogi I work for a school system. I am consistently watching, listening, and ready to hide or run. I don't have students but I do help with all the drills that are performed.
@dancinyogi As a European, I can hardly imagine the feeling of living in constant fear, that one could be shot just anytime, anywhere by some madman with an assault rifle. And I feel deeply sorry for you guys in the States that you can’t overcome this vicious cycle of violence.

@dancinyogi

Thankful?
I don't see it as good fortune that I can go about my life without fear of guns, I see it as my right as a citizen. 🇦🇺

@dancinyogi I answered “no” but I was in NYC for 9/11 and worked in the WTC, walking past the hole daily, so I already had/have the trauma response of always knowing where the entrances and exits are.

My response to both COVID and the shootings is to not go to places where there are a lot of people in a confined space. Ever. No more concerts, no more busy restaurants, no more movie theaters, no more big indoor events of any kind.

@dancinyogi No. As a Muslim who was told my a neighbor kid, while I was a kid back in the 80s/90s, that I was going to hell for being Muslim, I’ve generally always kept my eye on the exits.

Motorcyle safety classes later taught me some great techniques for visual scanning that translate well to pedestrian situational awareness.

In the .mil, they call it OODA, apparently.

@dancinyogi truthfully…I used to be a cop, as well as an Army veteran, so this level of awareness has been with me for a few decades. But it has become more acute in the last couple years.
