Stopping gun violence is such a complex issue that only every other advanced nation in the entire world has figured it out.
@Sundae_Gurl
Well. You can stop guns. But you can't stop violence by law.
Gun control won't solve the problems. The USA has social problems, that can't be solved by simple legislation.

You have to start somewhere, and it's much safer dealing with psychotic potential mass murderers if they lack the means to kill you.
@jeber
Well, even with strict gun control like in Germany, it is possible to buy weapons on black market. As an example: the Munich shopping mall OEC attack.
The crucial point is not the gun, it's the will to kill. Most German attacks are committed with kitchen knives, and that leads to death toll either.
After all, it's a multi factor problem, and therefore it is necessary, to analyse that properly.

We’ll never remove guns completely. But reducing their number is a reasonable goal. Humanity enjoys killing each other too much to eliminate all means of homicide.
@jeber
Well, before we decide to focus on one of several topics, we should assess the effort/benefit ratio. In the US, with so many fed states, it is a hard struggle to get a strict gun control. If you see the guns per person ratio and compare it to countries with stricter laws, you might wonder if number of homicides are not rather low in the US.
Most gun owners don't kill.
Another problem: most homicides are committed with illegal guns. Astonishingly, the number of illegal weapons is much higher than in countries with strict gun controll.
Those mass shootings are more related to mental health than gun ownership. My conclusion: good access to health care, both physically and mental, will do a better job than gun controll.
Though it is strange for us European, that you can buy an assault rifle at shopping malls in the US.

Most illegal weapons were once legally owned weapons before they were stolen.
This is not an either/or situation. We should be able to increase mental health care while at the same time passing sensible gun licensing, training, and insuring laws.
We also need to educate against the scare tactics of the right that have people being afraid to get a cup of coffee without packing.

@jeber
Some sources I read told, that most illegal weapons were loophole guns, deliberately sold without registration. I never checked that, because US inner affairs get not most of my attention. However, my view from outside as a foreigner is, that the USA has a society of strict rules, based on obedience and conformity, and this sets the risk of amok behavior very high.
That's why I think, more rules and more strictness will not work the way it's expected.
Not to worry about food, housing, medical care and so on will, imo, create a more laid back attitude.
