Jordan Neely’s homicide reminded be of this 2012 post so I fished it out of the Internet Archive. It grieves me how much the discussion of how we justify brutality still applies.

Deserve’s Got Nothing To Do With It

Thoughts From 2012 Seem Relevant in 2023

The Popehat Report
@Popehat Thank you for sharing that.

@Popehat One wonders if the real hero of the Rodney King story is the videographer.

Certainly they were a harbinger of the 21st Century, where ubiquitous cameras expose police brutality on what seems to be a daily basis, and even brutal attempts to suppress videographers.

@Popehat powerful piece, and lovely writing. I posted about it separately before I saw your toot, because it needs to be read by all thoughtful people

@anathema_device @Popehat "We have to demand that everyone be treated justly, whether our viscera tell us that they do not deserve the rule of law at all"

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time."

@Popehat Ken - I think you’ve said in the past that you’ve chosen not to write a regular, long form, or scripted content because of the stress it puts you under and the toll it takes on your mental health. Your writing is incredibly moving. Your insight is valuable and appreciated in whatever form you are able to share with us. Or not.

@Popehat It is disturbing to me that the message of your post seems so singular right now. I don't know if that means that I am not looking at the right kind of media, but while I know that I can find messages like that if I go looking for them, I do not see that anywhere in mass media.

That seems like a bad sign.
