I wish people would get over thinking about capitalism as though it were a religion. There is no "god" in it, not even money. The purpose of capitalism is to make more money, by any means available.
That's all there is to it. There's no heaven they reach where they're rewarded for getting a certain amount of the money. That's not how they think.
It's always "more"; never "enough".

They painted shareholder value in the style of a moral virtue, and then elevated it above all the others.
I don't believe in hell, but I hope Milton Friedman is burning in it.
@OutOnTheMoors I remember in college we examined capitalism in a political science class, and my Prof said one difference between Capitalism and any other system is there's no endgame. There's no utopia envisioned at the end, just eternal consolidation and resets.
@Tweetfiction Your prof was right. We're not in "late-stage" capitalism as much as "latest-stage" capitalism
@OutOnTheMoors Agreed. And since by it's nature it consolidates wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people the only solution other than discarding it is periodic resets. We're WAY overdue for that.

@OutOnTheMoors And I think it's important to note that "more money" is the basis for decisions — not ethics, not morality, community, not even law: if violating any of those will produce a net profit (e.g., after fines and settlements and legal costs), most corporations will decide to go for the money.

@Leisureguy Absolutely. In some countries the cost of bribes is factored into company budgets as they're drawn up. In others, it's the cost of fines.

@OutOnTheMoors The Ford Pinto and its exploding gas tank (that sounds somewhat like a Tom Swift novel) is the canonical example:
