MoosterNew York gun buyback program takes thousands of firearms off the street
This seems all well and good but what can stop someone handing in their old gun, getting the gift card and buying a nice new shiny gun? Or am I being cynical?
Cryosleeper@Mooster most probably just unfamiliarity with New York state laws - you are required to have a license to legally buy a new semi-auto rifle (a proper name for that newspeak "assault-style"), while the program seems to be aimed at reducing quantities of illegally owned ones.
@cryosleeper thanks for clarification. Looking on from afar it does seem remarkably easy to buy guns of any type.
@Mooster depending on the state, it might be. A tug-of-war between people who want to buy a rocket launcher one day and people who want to ban everything with a barrel, multiplied by a federal nature of USA, results in a very patchy and inconsistent legal framework. Media coverage doesn't help as well - you will hear about one crime instead of a hundred lawful Sunday target shooters, and criminal will most probably have an illegally bought gun on them.
