@mmasnick done by far the best job of chronicling the Twitter/Musk follies and the resulting social media diaspora. His 6-months-later piece, on where we stand in what I hope will be a massive move to decentralized networking, is a must-read: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/28/six-months-in-thoughts-on-the-current-post-twitter-diaspora-options/
Six Months In: Thoughts On The Current Post-Twitter Diaspora Options

Today is six months since Elon took over Twitter and began this bizarre speedrun of the content moderation learning curve in which he seems to repeatedly… not learn a damn thing. Over and over agai…

Who owns #bluesky? Who are its investors/shareholders? What legal contracts/agreements govern its split from Twitter? What developments in ownership & control were pushed pre-, during, & post Musk takeover? Who paid whom?

Clear information about this is absent from tech reporting on Bluesky, and after the Dorsey/Musk disaster at Twitter, it really should not be.

@dangillmor @mmasnick

What do both of you know about these questions from your reporting on Bluesky?

@dangillmor @mmasnick

Still no information on who owns Bluesky the app and Bluesky the protocol?

@chargrille @dangillmor "Bluesky, the company, is a Public Benefit LLC. It is owned by Jay Graber and the Bluesky team." https://blueskyweb.xyz/faq
Frequently Asked Questions - Bluesky

@chargrille @mmasnick @dangillmor How is the ownership structured among the team? Who is considered part of the team? Is board member Jack part of the team? If so, how much does Jack own? The same thread says that Twitter doesn't have a "controlling stake" in Bluesky, which means that Twitter may have a stake of up to 49%, in addition to Jack's stake of unknown size. That thread doesn't tell us anywhere near as much as it pretends to, which appears to be by design.

@str_pe @mmasnick @dangillmor

These are all important questions, I agree. Also, is the intellectual property of Bluesky AT Protocol vs. Bluesky the app owned by the same people? Is it exclusively owned by Bluesky PBLLP, or are there other owners of the IP, outside of Bluesky PBLLP?

@mmasnick @dangillmor

That statement by Bluesky doesn't answer the question. No journalists have tried to get the actual names of the owners and the structure/share?

The "public benefit" should be spelled out in the organizing documents, as well. Has Bluesky provided you with a copy of those?

@mmasnick @chargrille @dangillmor
"Who owns Bluesky?"
"The Bluesky team."
