I can’t block this racist on Bluesky.

I can only mute him.

By the way, my content moderation is set to hide political hate groups.

I got a racist message anyway.

Clearly, moderation by algorithm isn’t working.

Again for everyone saying, “Why are you using Bluesky?”

I’m demonstrating that their algorithmic moderation settings aren’t working.

Tech media isn’t reporting this. But I am.

I’m telling you that setting “Political Hate Groups” to “Hide” on Bluesky isn’t working so far.

@atomicpoet Damn that's wild. I've been waiting on my invite so I can also experiment with it.
@atomicpoet @mekkaokereke Apparently they haven't implemented blocking yet?? 😳

“The CEO of bluesky tried to delay its release citing safety concerns, over the objection of jack. It released *without the ability to block*”

@acm_redfox @mekkaokereke Nope! You can’t block!
@atomicpoet @acm_redfox @mekkaokereke It's like Jack looked at Reddit's block limit and said "how can we make this even WORSE and ENSURE that everyone is harassed by nazis and trolls?"
@atomicpoet Thank you for doing this reporting. I appreciate your posts!
@atomicpoet
Hmph.
The very fact that there's a setting for "Political Hate Groups" there means the platform is normalizing the presence of political hate groups.
Which in turn is enough for me to know that it's another toxic hell-stew to stay well away from.

@atomicpoet

It's in their financial (advertising) interests to get as close to hate speech as legally permissible.

It's just how the economic incentives of non-subscription media work.

Obviously as private platform owners they _could_ refuse to platform Nazis.

@atomicpoet Some things that I haven't seen explained with any real clarity is, how does the "political hate group" tag get attached? Who does the tagging? If you disagree with a tag applied to you, can you appeal? What happens when Nazis & BLM both claim that the other are the 'real' political hate groups?

etc.

It's a shame, because like you, I do see that BlueSKy has potential, but it seems they too are determined to speed run the content moderation learning curve

@atomicpoet in my opinion that shouldn’t even be an option, I get the ‘freedom of choice’ angle and all but.. come on, some things should transcend personal preferences.

also, by not filtering that stuff out by default they’re essentially admitting that they don’t care about their service being used to spread hate, and I don’t think that’s very good optics..

@atomicpoet the question I would ask is what is the mechanism on Blue Sky for a poster on Blue Sky to be associated with a Political Hate Group?
Do they simply self-declare "I'm a Nazi"?
Surely the normal route would be for you to be able to report them and, based on their post for moderators to decide that the poster belonged in one of those groups and should be categorised as such.
@marjolica Yes, that's another problem because the current algorithmic approach seems like a black box.

@atomicpoet It’s a bit of a tell that “Political Hate Groups” are a recognized thing that is allowed on BlueSky.

“Hello! We have so many Political Hate Groups here that we actually categorize them! But we’re not going to do a damn thing about them.”

@atomicpoet the fact that its like we will allow them but you can hide them is awful! I do wonder what moderation tools will be available for the first FOSS implantations of AT Protocol.
