I can reveal, with sadness and puzzlement, that it appears Margaret Pless, who exposed #Kiwifarms with this famous article back in 2016 and describes herself on her Twitter profile as a ‘church administrator’, has posted more than 500 times on the site, and that this includes troubling racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist and arguably anti-Catholic content. 🧵
As not uncommonly occurs in this community, her identity was exposed by another Kiwifarms member. At first she maintained her male alias was the truth and engaged in homophobic and sexist swagger, then she admitted the reality.
In these screenshots she uses the racially offensive n-word.
Here she uses the homophobic f-word, and in one screenshot makes statements I would consider anti-Catholic.
Here she expresses transphobic views.
Here she uses the ableist r-word.
In September she criticised Caroline Farrow, a Catholic, for participating in Kiwifarms, and specifically, for being transphobic on Kiwifarms. This now looks hypocritical.
I have not read all of her posts, but for the sake of balance I will add that I have seen posts of hers that strongly criticise Kiwifarms, refute Holocaust deniers and argue against racism. Furthermore, I believe her to have shown courage and integrity in going public with the 2016 article, and I understand she has endured Kiwifarms harassment as a result of that.
Here she criticises Kiwifarms and it’s owner Joshua Moon, although she regrettably misgenders a trans woman in the process.
Here again she speaks out against Kiwifarms.
Here she speaks out against racism.
Nevertheless, the fact remains she is clearly an intelligent and educated woman with a masters degree, has worked as a journalist, knows about the world and understands Kiwifarms better than most … which makes it all the more perplexing that she has chosen to take part in what she herself described as ‘the web’s biggest community of stalkers’. Still less why she has lowered herself to their level in some of her posts.
