The fact that the American political system already seems poised to produce a Trump- Biden rematch in 2024 is quite a serious indictment of that system.

@anneapplebaum So what makes Harris so unpopular? I realize the Rs would think so- she is a woman, Black, with roots in Asia, and highly intelligent. Why is she unpopular with Democrats?

@PennyG @anneapplebaum She’s unpopular with anticarceral Democrats b/c she was an AG and called herself the “top cop” of California

I think one reason she’s unpopular with other Democrats because the Biden administration hasn’t given her anything significant to do

@peterbutler @anneapplebaum Thanks. She just completed a visit to Africa that might be important. I hope Pres. Biden does more to emphasize her abilities. She is a good counterweight to him- she is a POC, a woman, former prosecutor (which isn't necessarily a bad thing.) She brings a lot to the table, but the media has ignored her. I think she is a victim of media bias.
@PennyG @anneapplebaum
She was very unimpressive in the primaries last election. Doesn't think well on her feet. Had organizational problems.
@eberg @anneapplebaum thanks. I know her campaign was disorganized in the primaries, but I tend to think campaigning and governing are separate skill sets. I appreciate the response on the other 2 factors.

@anneapplebaum 🙄🙄

Why cant our leaders be chosen by wise people like Susan Glasser and her husband Peter Baker?

PS the system that needs indictment is the media, especially after how they went after and targeted a Dem candidate because she was a woman

@anneapplebaum Joe Biden is a fantastic president in a singularly difficult moment -- a moment when, among other things, our mainstream media has decided to offer conclusive proof that a democratically responsible media ultimately cannot co-exist with capitalism.
@anneapplebaum Only the Trump part is an indictment of journalism. The coverage of him as though the last three years haven’t proven he’s national security threat, a criminal, traitorous, power abusing, white supremacist, misogynist, raper, unfit for office makes me think fascism already won in 2024. All Biden has done is help Americans, reclaimed our global reputation, strengthened agencies, addressed climate change in historic ways, but media they cover the two as though they are the same.

Both Sides

by Susan Glasser

@anneapplebaum In Biden v Trump, America would have a choice between an ageing white man in his 80s and an ageing white man in his late 70s.

And America still retains a self-image of being a country of youth, vitality and diversity.

@anneapplebaum

Biden is a successful president who is running for reelection ... just as Reagan, Clinton, Bush, and Obama did. His only crime is being too old in the eyes of some in the media.

What makes the rematch grotesque is the fact that the Republicans actually want Trump to be their candidate.

@anneapplebaum Personally I think the fact that the system is incapable of preventing a spread of "safe seats" (political gerrymandering), thus basically disabling voting/democracy completely or mostly.

Trump vs Biden OTOH is not exactly surprising, it's Duveger's law brought to its conclusion.

@yacc143 @anneapplebaum It seems the alternative under discussion is not a possible 3rd-party candidate but Trump vs Harris. And imho, if everything were alright with the US they should now be in a temporary one-party phase.
@anneapplebaum
I don't think you're allowed to run from prison.
@anneapplebaum I think the indictment is of the American people who obviously care more to see a reality show episode than anything else.
