Great news!: #Colorado sides with farmers securing the #RightToRepair their -very-expensive equipment rather than wait for and pay for locked-in, proprietary services.

This movement is gathering momentum: "10 other states have introduced similar legislation, including in Florida, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, Texas and Vermont."

But doesn’t that clash with DCMA or other copyright or anti-decrypting legislation?

I cannot read the wivb.com website, it probably does not want to comply with GDPR and uses geoblocking.

Sorry the link is broken for you.

Frankly, DMCA is old, flawed, & biased toward big corporations anyway.

The problem is it defines "copying" & "reverse-engineering" so broadly that it bulldozes over legitimate uses. It also prioritizes corporate ownership of a thing/idea over individual/community ownership of a thing.

I should have complete dominion over my phone/tractor if I'm not using it for illegal acts.

Of ourse is DMCA flawed. Ofcourse everyone should have control over their smartphone and all other computers (micro wave ovens, smart light bulbs, etc). But DMCA and other legislation does clash with right to repair and is federal law (at the moment)?

@Life_is @pluralistic @eff
Right, they clash.

The conflict hinges on the definition of property rights. The company "owns" the software but you own your tractor/IPhone, say.

It's also contractual. Deere/Apple makes you agree that you are a mere custodian of the device you bought & paid for and are sole user of. Ridiculous.

"Legally" that makes jailbreaking your device a felony even for. your. own. use. How can that stand?
