are hashtags actually a big deal on here? I have literally never used or followed one and it's not like i'm running out of stuff to read.

if anything, posts with 15 tags shoehorned in are likelier to get skipped or even get the user muted, because ugh

@palecur I think I've mostly seen them used on art/photos/etc, which seems fair as a way to discover and label things. They look uncommon in text and I only use them occasionally (often although not always when I'd already use the word so all I'm doing is tagging it).
@palecur I hashtag more here since it's the only real way to opt in to search. Hashtags are more or less meaningless on Twitter now.
@palecur They’re more important here than at the #FowlPlace because there’s no full-text search across instances (and for many instances, even locally,) the population is a bit sparse, and propagation is imperfect. Hashtags improve people’s ability to find toots *and people* that they enjoy reading but might otherwise never find.
