So I do a lot of complaining about innovation in Europe. Yet I've also stressed one of our stronger points, cooperation. Today I found out most of Europe's electricity grid is ruled by an astoundingly clever algorithm that is so good you've never heard of it: Euphemia.
Through this algorithm, Europe's electricity producers & consumers are matched up every day with their hourly respective production possibilities and consumption needs, taking into account the constraints of (international) connectors. The algorithm takes 17 minutes to converge!
A lot of fun details can be found here: https://energy.n-side.com/resources/case-studies/euphemia, with full details in this PDF https://nemo-committee.eu/assets/files/euphemia-public-description.pdf. It is amazing what can be achieved when countries & companies work together!
N-SIDE makes pan-European, single-day-ahead coupling possible with EUPHEMIA

In this case study, we detail the history, inner workings, and results of the PCR EUPHEMIA algorithm, which is used by 26 countries across Europe.

@bert_hubert Back when I worked for RSM (EUR), we had a future energy centre. A lot of research went into working out algorithms based on (Dutch) auction models and others.

Was this professor at the time: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfgang_Ketter
Might find a lot of interesting stuff under his name as well as the Power TAC project (https://powertac.org/).

@bert_hubert yet, another reason to get the fuck out of BRELL...
@bert_hubert and I thought that communicating via frequency offsets was already quite advanced and fault tolerant. This is advanced indeed.
@Jhelberg That part is amazing as well! Should write something about that too...
