Hello all! I've started a newsletter called "Unprofessoring". It's about deliberately dismantling the academic self, interrogating the stories we tell about being scientists and faculty, and renegotiating our relationship with our jobs.

Check it out at unprofessoring.substack.com

I’m starting out with a series of essays that apply the concept of "conscious uncoupling" to the process of leaving academia. I’d love to hear what you think.

It’s free to subscribe.

@ehaswell Subscribed! And congrats on making your escape. Wish this newsletter had been around when I uncoupled from academia after my postdoc in the early 2000s. I think the analogy of a romantic relationship is good, but the analogy of a cult also has some merit––for example, exit costs, etc. Of course neither one is perfect... https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-cult-of-academia/id1566917047?i=1000556290607

@ehaswell I left academia at a different stage than you did––will be interesting to see your perspective on walking away as a prof, as opposed to walking away as a postdoc (which I think is more common).
@jennifermach I saw that podcast, and the one on academia, but didn’t quite get myself to listen . .. !!
@ehaswell Ooh, wish I'd had this resource a dozen or so years ago—going to check it out!
@ehaswell Just read the latest newsletter about "whose fault is it". Very thought-provoking––I had not really processed my reasons for leaving academia either.
@jennifermach thank you! I realized that I was saying “it’s complicated” as a way to avoid really parsing it out. . . !!
