Rio de Janeiro has a recently built bypass highway (Arco Metropolitano) which is barely used because it's unsafe, as in there's a high risk of mugging. Truck drivers prefer using highways going through more urbanised areas to keep themselves and their cargo safe.

A good example of how a lack of public safety is bad for urban sprawl. https://g1.globo.com/rj/rio-de-janeiro/noticia/2022/12/07/muita-promessa-e-pouca-entrega-veja-como-arco-metropolitano-passou-de-solucao-de-trafego-para-rota-fantasma-e-perigosa.ghtml

@DiegoBeghin how would you rob a truck going 100 km/h?
@jeder @DiegoBeghin without going very die?
@[email protected] @DiegoBeghin i am thinking more about autostop
@jeder @DiegoBeghin i would just not stop?
@pony @jeder You can blockade the road with a couple of cars. Admittedly there's sometimes the opposite issue, with drivers stuck in a traffic jam being easy prey for muggers.
@DiegoBeghin It's crazy how opposite this is from the US. USians always believe they are invulnerable in their cars!
@OneShoup Yup, if organised gangs were pulling these kinds of stunts in the US the police would be willing and able to crack down on them.
