Yep, I always found hashtags a bit icky - they get overused on other platforms, but here they are a vital indexing tool.

Hashtags are the most effective search and organization tool.
You can add a bunch of folks who like #DoctorWho into a list but they don't always talk about that so a hashtag search gets you just what you want right then.
We just need to encourage with extreme predjuice people to use them....

Oh, come on... It sounds stronger that "begging people to use hashtags" or "strongly suggesting" and more polite than "beat them into submission".
