Researchers estimate that if the top 1% of Americans paid the full amount of taxes they owed, it would raise $175 billion a year.

That’s just UNPAID taxes. Not new or higher taxes.

This is the real looting in America.

The richest 1 percent dodge taxes on more than one-fifth of their income, study shows

Those at the very top of the income spectrum deny the U.S. government roughly $175 billion a year in revenue, researchers estimate.

The Washington Post
@rbreich based on the graphic, it should read top 5%, not just 1%.
@rbreich Why should the vast American financial infrastructure (including our courts and enormous police power) be used to protect the accumulated wealth of the 1 percent if they aren't gonna pay their fair share of all the government run wealth protection services? The Rich benefit disproportionately from stable and fair rule of law.
@rbreich This is why I don’t particularly like the “wealth tax” narrative. It implies another tax and that sounds like a lot of (unpopular) work. The super wealthy simply need to pay the taxes that already exist.
@rbreich I m tired of freeloading billionaires

@rbreich

The government could do something about this abuse, if it wanted to.

@rbreich but America is there to feed that 1% , not the other way around
@rbreich Sir, you quoted WaPo to make your point. BTW, if we know what they owe, then why do they do their own taxes? Why not just have the government start confiscating? I mean, it worked for Stalin, right?

@rbreich

As a person who spent his entire professional life in the tax business, i can attest to the below. The rich, not all, but a lot, think rules do not apply to them. And their money allows them to buy politicians who do their bidding. Like cutting the IRS budget and telling the poor and middle class it's for them!
Think the Panama Papers! All those off shore accounts!!
