#PMvEng asks Q6: #JacobyRule - How much of your #personalbrand comes into play in your project process? Does it lead to unconscious bias or have u been viewed w/bias because of your public persona? What do u do to improve yourself as an individual?

Note: The #JacobyRule is named after me because I used to cheer when extra questions were posted!!

@jacobyaudio I'm trying to avoid my personal brand - that's what got me into a consultancy that has had limited growth. I try to build repeatable processes that are reliable, and I can hand off to other folks as they come onto the company.

My partner has been key to keeping biases in check and good practices on track - she pushes for higher pay/profit sharing, strategic hiring and partnerships, and avoiding problematic companies.

@jacobyaudio I quit Twitter after transphobia was allowed to run rampant. I'm not going to be on a platform that spreads hate without even an attempt at stopping it. I can't boycott every company in existence, but I can at least take a stand when there's something this bad going on.

@avmsp Agreed. It's much nicer over here.

Only takes a few seconds of scrolling on the bird site to run into misinformation and hate.

#AVinTheAM

@jacobyaudio I've blocked so many people on Twitter that by their new weighting rules, it doesn't even matter what I post, I might as well not exist :)

@avmsp Mastodon does have a very good filter system. It's easy to filter out toots that contain keywords you don't want to see. That's a long with muting and hiding the worst of them.

It's also a neat trick that you can follow hashtags on here. I've found some great audio discussions on here just by following #audio

@jacobyaudio I need to spend more time on here. I've been putting a lot of time in on the commercial AV discord... that getting pretty active.

Does Mastodon support any regex filtering? I've got a good script from Reddit that works well.

@avmsp I'm not a huge fan of Discord. Just too many notifications!!

Define "regex"? Depending on the server you're in, there are instances that get automatically blocked.

@jacobyaudio you can manage alerts. I'm on a lot of servers, so I keep it tidy with mentions only.

Regular expressions. It lets you block words and all variations easily. It's tedious to write in, but effective.
