Growing up in #Toronto, I naturally held #NYC in awe. As the joke goes, it takes two Torontonians to change a lightbulb: one to change it, and one to go to New York and make sure lightbulbs are still cool. When I went to New York, I had a *great* place to stay: my cousin Maxine's rent-controlled apartment in a midtown doorman building off 23d and Lex.

Q:How many electricians does it take to change a light bulb?

A: one

@maelduin13 @pluralistic Just think, we're at most a generation away from light bulb jokes being as obsolescent as jokes about slide rules and buggy whips!

@cstross @maelduin13 @pluralistic

Not until LED bulbs are built to a higher standard, we're not - I've had to swap out at least three LED bulbs in the past year because of sub-par power handling on their PCB's.

I don't think it's quite as bad as, say, printer ink, but certainly the industry doesn't want something so reliable they go out of business...

@abcderian @cstross @maelduin13 @pluralistic LED bulbs that you can swap out are a big part of the problem - the LEDs will be fine but the drivers aren't happy if they're in some toasty old-fashioned fitting/enclosure. Time to switch to LED fixtures instead of LEDs compromised by 'bulb' shapes, drivers compromised by space and price, one thing or another compromised by the place you're plugging it in. Then you get to choose driver per fixture, or DC spur for all your lights.
