The Day Windows Died

As a longtime user of Windows, it was my first choice when preparing the first computer for my son. But that didn't work out as expected.

@asp_net give #linux a try, it even has old school solitaire available 😀
@asp_net Switched to Linux Mint last year. Recommend it.
@asp_net giving the child a gnu/Linux machine for goodness sake!!!
@asp_net many already proposed to switch to Linux. I simply share my journey - all three kids had Linux PCs/laptops until they were over ~14 years old and saved for Windows license. All school tasks were OK on Linux machines, gaming was OK, security was OK as well. I'm not trying to say Linux will save the world, but it helps. Now my kids have what they want, but they are also more cautions about IT/social dangers, about the price they pay for OS, apps and the values they get (or lack thereof).

@asp_net
So what OS did you give your children? MacOS is much better than MS Windows but it has some of the same problems you describe with Windows.

Do you develop .NET on MacOS? How smoothly does that work?

@railmeat Which of the issues of Windows does macOS share, you think? I got him a Mac, and so far it worked out as I hoped for.

dotnet on macOS works flawlessly for many years now (same on Linux).

@asp_net
Apple makes great hardware, as long as you don't ever want to upgrade or repair it.

MacOS is an advertising platform for Apple's services. iOS is worse. The Apple applications are mediocre and getting worse.

Given the available choices I think MacOS is the best option. I use that most of the time. I don't like the direction Apple is going.

Linux might be a better option if exploration is the goal.

@asp_net Linux for the rescue. Best educational OS ever.
@asp_net I truly think for me that Windows 10 is the highest I'll go. Not only can't I run Win 11 on most of my (slightly older) PCs, I use it daily for work and absolutely despise it. I've been a windows desktop user forever, and a Linux server user, but this is pushing me to adopt a desktop Linux setup in the future.
