Man, I dunno. My family doesn’t sit around the Thanksgiving table saying “You know, black men abandon their children and that’s why we have crime, pass the yams.” I think your family may just be racist.

@BoozyBadger holy yikes

yeah my mom's hardly "not racist" and I've still seen her recoil in horror at statements milder than those.

@BoozyBadger Speaking as someone raised in a family/subculture that fits his description: yes, Sparky, your grandpa is racist. Just because that stuff is common doesn't mean it's not a whole shitload of bigoted trash.

@BoozyBadger I might be Canadian but.... my parents and I talk about their travels, our cats, and my work. As well as movies, tv shows and such.

But yeah seems like someone is a wee bit racist.

@BoozyBadger yeah just because it was a common thing in white families during gatherings doesn't excuse it for the bigoted trash it is.
It only tells us how common it is and how much more we need to call our families out on their bullshit and cut ties if need be
@BoozyBadger Actually, I used to hear this kind of stuff at my Thanksgiving table when I was a kid. I won't repeat it here.
