Why SUVs are especially dangerous for bicyclists

Fatal bicycle crash rates have risen dramatically over the past decade.

Axios
@axios It's got to be a factor that nearly every cyclist runs stop signs, and often doesn't even look before sailing right through intersections with stop signs. And with vehicles present. I mean, why bother even wearing the helmet, except as a fashion statement or something, if you don't follow basic common-sense traffic safety laws.

@brianstorms @axios That seems speculative, but…

Perhaps we should dedicate several thoroughfares for bicycles and pedestrians in major cities - and exclude vehicular traffic from them.

The cars, not the bicycles, should be restricted.

@adamjcook @axios Oh, I am all for bicycles and motor vehicles having dedicated segregated thoroughfares. A fair number of motor vehicles-only, and a fair number of bikes-only. Motor vehicles and bikes cordoned off on their own. With cops everywhere making sure bikes stay off of any motor vehicle thoroughfare and vice versa. That oughta take care of the matter.

@brianstorms @axios Not sure that heavy enforcement would be necessary.

It is likely that bicyclists would avoid traveling in close proximity to cars if provided the chance to do so.

Especially these days with no only large vehicles to contend with, but also, vehicles equipped with flimsy automated driving systems and highly-distracting interfaces - some complete with web browsers, games, various apps and on-screen Karaoke lyrics to keep driver distraction to its maximum extent.

@adamjcook @axios Always everyone else’s fault but the saintly cyclists. Bye.

Helmets won't save you from an SUV

And get back to us on the stop sign lecture, once drivers actually obey speed limits
