In most wealthy countries, the government figures out how much in taxes you owe them — and for free. As all of you know, that’s not the case here in the U.S.

The reason? Tax prep companies don’t want it that way. And they spend big money on lobbying to make sure of it.

@rbreich that seems like a fairly small amount to buy off the federal government. How can that be? Is there no organization representing ordinary tax payer interests that could match that? Gotta be more to it?

Your only hope is to support the democratic party, and then to stay involved to keep them honest as well. The system is very corrupting.
