Things that even young children can explain, based on their experience of living in the world, are way out of the grasp of today’s AI.

“ChatGPT is a fascinating tool that will undoubtedly be used for good – and not-so-good – purposes. But don’t be fooled into thinking that it understands the words it spews, let alone that it’s sentient.”

It takes a body to understand the world – why ChatGPT and other language AIs don’t know what they’re saying

Large language models can’t understand language the way humans do because they can’t perceive and make sense of the world.

So we have ChatGPT and its relatives. They were trained on huge corpuses of text, and text is all they understand.

Now imagine a robot feeding one of these algorithms and taking direction from it. The #AI isn't learning from text, its learning from reality. It won't be a Large Language Model, it will be a Large Causality Model, able to consider likely consequences of its actions and choose the one plan that best suits its goals. That's the point it gets scary.
