i know everyone is sick of LLM/AI Hype takes by now, but i had a thought i don't think i've seen elsewhere so i need to get it out of my brain:

the way that cars enshittified public urban space, the movement of individuals through it, and demands for related infrastructure,

seems like a pretty good analogy for how the current trajectory of AI hype is enshitiffying the internet and software industry

@chrisamaphone I feel like this has already happened with the web (perhaps not on as big a scale as it soon will, but big and bad enough to render most public spaces unusable) and at this point I'm interested in any analogous "parallel system of non-shitty urban-rail".

@graydon @chrisamaphone Thinking about this metaphor and the first thing that comes to mind is the idea of a "walkable neighborhood", IE, a demarcated human-friendly area which has *most* of what you need, but by limiting yourself to it you are cutting yourself off from some things

Also: Not always but sometimes, unique problems with handicap accessibility the "shitty" spaces don't have. Hm. This actually is a pretty good metaphor for OSS. >_>
