Today is the 161 year anniversary of the Compensated Emancipation Act. On April 16, 1862, Washington D.C. paid reparations for ending slavery—to the enslavers.

Yep—white supremacist enslavers got reparations for giving up the people they enslaved. The enslaved got nothing. Ever.

To this day the enslaved or their descendants have received zero reparations for building the foundation of America under centuries of enslavement, torture, rape, & murder.
#ReparationsAreOverDue

@QasimRashid Hey, don't think the US is alone about this. Britain just paid off reparations to the descendants of the enslavers in 2015! Imagine, in 2015, receiving a check for the slaves your great-great-great-grandparents owned and not seeing a problem with this.
@Mxhrad @QasimRashid Yeah and Haiti went from one of the richest nations to the poorest as they were forced to pay France reparations to their former slave owners into the 1900s.

What's worse is that Citybank bought Haiti's debt and took payments from the impoverished country until the 1940's, but nothing is as bad as wealthy aristocrats in Britain accepting slavery payments until a few years ago. It's not like in 2015 they finally saw how horrible they were being and refused to accept more payments, it's just that their debts were just paid in full at that time.
