@_benui eh, while I get where you are coming from, competition can push us to excel in ways we weren't sure we could, and doesn't necessarily mean a zero sum game.
@pyperkub I'm not going to compete with your critical analysis of my stolen photo
@_benui did you ever read David Brin's Earth? One bit I really liked (of many, many in that book) was the look at how both competition AND cooperation can shape evolution.
@_benui I also am not interested in watching other people compete. I wish they would stop making those TV programs where creative people are forced to compete and then rejected until only one is left. Why not just keep all the participants, then you can find out that the people you would have 'sent home' in weeks 1 and 2 are brilliant in weeks 3 and 4.
@JonathanBlackmore @_benui
Read, "Turn This Ship Around". Interesting true story of the successful application of leadership hierarchy, individual initiative, and hierarchy spanning cooperative teams to move a submarine from the bottom of the fleet to the best performer and desired assignment. All by necessity.
@_benui *goes out of business*
@privacytime101 so you agree we should dismantle capitalism
@_benui I don’t really do political takes, just wanted to point out the (unfortunately) probable outcome
@_benui But in the end, none of us do... πŸ’€πŸ€·
@_benui this is my weekly status report every week
@_benui but competition is fun!

@wolf480pl @_benui

In what way?

@pete @_benui
Well obviously winning is satisfying and therefore fun. And the harder it was to win, the more satisfying it is.

But losing can also be satisfying, especially if it was a close call, or if your opponent won by doing something genious.

And I think in the long run, because you and your rival have to watch and understand what the other is doing, you end up learning from each other. And also you motivate each other to get even better.

@pete @_benui
Now, the key about healthy competition is that both sides want to become better.

You rarely see megacorps do that. Megacoprs don't want to compete. They want to destroy their rivals. Their goal is domination.

@wolf480pl @_benui

I don't find competition fun at all. I enjoy self improvement, certainly, but "comparison is the thief of joy".

Corporations generally have been fascist institutions, from their attitude to competitors, and also internal structure and culture.

When I first read Frederick Winslow Taylor's 1911 treatise on The Principles of Scientific Management, I realised that it was inhumane.

There are many reasons why corporations suck, what I meant is we shouldn't let them affect how we view the idea of competition.

I think it's to be expected that not everyone will enjoy competition. But for me, self-improvement alone isn't very fun, and I quickly lose motivation. And it's hard to know if I'm making progress. And cooperation too often becomes a division of responsibilities, so I end up being alone anyway....

@_benui @[email protected] Beautiful! I would sum it up in sort of a Steve Jobs’ mold: Focus on creating great products & carving your own niche in the market, rather than getting consumed by rivalry. Success comes from excellence & innovation, not just beating others. πŸπŸ’‘πŸš€

@_benui yeah, good one. Competition is the cancer of this society, injected in children's minds since very young ("who is faster/taller/stronger..?", school grades..).

Cooperation and inspiration FTW

@_benui
This is nice but
what is
going on
with the balance of those lines
@tomw
I will get right
on that
as soon as
I find who made the sign
@_benui Better wellbeing starts by stopping competing and starting cooperation.
@_benui We all lose when we believe that standing one spot ahead in line is winning.
@_benui Aw! Mostly, this is me, but there is a competitor switch in here, which rarely gets flipped, but if it does, it's *ON*
But it takes a lot...
