This is a very insightful point from @melaniesill. Real-world events the NYT might otherwise frame as "Gay People in Florida Face Increasing Harassment" or "Florida Abortion Ban Leaves Women Desperate" are now exclusively presented as "DeSantis Seeks to Rally Evangelical Voters" or "DeSantis Leans Into his Anti-Woke Brand." Once you notice it it's everywhere, and it's completely toxic.

Florida expands 'Don't Say Gay'; House OKs anti-LGBTQ bills

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis can add more wins to his agenda targeting the LGBTQ+ community. A state board approved an expansion of what critics call the “Don’t Say Gay” law on Wednesday, and the House passed bills on gender-transition treatments, bathroom use and keeping children out of drag shows. The Board of Education approved a ban on classroom instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades, expanding the law that bans those lessons up to grade 3 at the request of DeSantis as he gears up for an expected presidential run. The prohibition has drawn intense backlash from critics. They argue it marginalizes LGBTQ+ people and results in self-censorship from teachers.

@aristofontes It’s a waste of journalistic resources to do this kind of coverage
@aristofontes @melaniesill What a profound insight. To appear non-partisan, news outlets pitch everything as horse-race politics--who's up, who's down, what will move voters, etc.--and in so doing they normalize the most horrendous behavior, the abuse of human rights, and the violence associated with scapegoating and culture wars.

@aristofontes @melaniesill

Hard to know whether horse-race journalism, access journalism, or both-sides-ism has been more damaging to democracy and basic human rights, but all three are contributors.

@aristofontes @melaniesill here is a great video from @Vox about this “tactical framing” https://youtu.be/UpqFaf8vQfk
Why you still don't understand the Green New Deal

YouTube
@yy @aristofontes @Vox That’s terrific, hadn’t seen
@yy what YOU don’t understand about the aspirational GND is that the actual actions the Biden administration is taking to address climate change far exceeds anything in the GND could have accomplished, is transitioning the country to renewable energy and simultaneously phasing out fossil fuel dependency, and he needs 4 more years for his most progressive and diverse administration in history to finish the job.
@JJPeterson I’m merely pointing out the concept of tactical framing and linking a video that explains it well. I didn’t say that GND is aspirational or anything like that.
@yy the video was irritating af to me, so I’m not sure that worked.
@aristofontes @melaniesill it’s why I cancelled my NYT subscription and haven’t looked back.
@aristofontes @melaniesill Infuriating. People are dying, women & girls are dying, they are being physically damaged for life - talk about that!
@aristofontes @melaniesill Yes, it’s always a question of who is being left out of the conversation and who is being centered.
