An apparent coup attempt in #Sudan as the Rapid Support Forces, amid clashes with the army, claim control of the presidential palace, Khartoum international airport and the army chief’s residence.
“Escalation of tensions within the military component to direct fighting is extremely dangerous,” says the US ambassador to #Sudan, John Godfrey. “I urgently call on senior military leaders to stop the fighting.”
US Secretary of State Blinken says he's "deeply concerned about reports of escalating violence between the RSF and the #Sudan army. "We urge all actors to stop the violence immediately and avoid further escalations or troop mobilizations and continue talks to resolve outstanding issues."
Spokesman for the #UN secretary-general says António Guterres has just spoken to the chairperson of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, regarding #Sudan and “they agreed to coordinate their efforts to work towards an immediate deescalation of the crisis.”
“I urge General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Degalo to take active measures to reduce tensions and ensure the safety of all civilians,” says Secretary of State Blinken in an updated statement on #Sudan.
