The US has at least 34 bitcoin mining operations. They consume more than 3,900 megawatts of electricity. That is nearly the same amount of electricity as 3 million households. In Texas, where 10 of the 34 mines are connected to the state’s grid, it's estimated the increased demand has caused electric bills for power customers to rise nearly 5 percent. The additional power use across the country also causes as much carbon pollution as adding 3.5 million gas-powered cars. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/09/business/bitcoin-mining-electricity-pollution.html
The Real-World Costs of the Digital Race for Bitcoin

Bitcoin mines cash in on electricity — by devouring it, selling it, even turning it off — and they cause immense pollution. In many cases, the public pays a price.

@augieray Stuff like this is what soured me on Bitcoin years ago... neat idea, but an ugly implementation
@augieray Amazingly, no one has dared to sabotage bitcoin mining operations. Seems like a fair target.
@augieray personal greed over everything
@augieray another #Capitalist project & distraction for those in power.
End #patriarchalcapitalism.
@augieray Think of the good that could be done if that power was instead used for projects like folding@home...
@augieray wuts an industry that uses that much power for another product some may think to be as frivolous? Wonder if theres a list of energy usage per industry out there.
@augieray Seeing that extreme amount of current consumption, coukdn’t it be a better solution for everyone there, if the Bitcoin peeps, generated their own power??
Lots of profiting (in the past) for them! Lots of funding around to generate their own, instead of taxing the state’s current generation abilities.
