The Abandoned Wild Yarn Mill in Manayunk, PA | Abandoned America

Built in 1884, the Wilde Yarn mill in Manyunk, PA was listed as the oldest continually operating carpet yarn mill in America at the time of its closing in 2008. When I photographed it in 2012, I was unaware how quickly it would change. By Matthew Christopher Murray of Abandoned America

@AbandonedAmerica The leather belts powered all the machinery from water power or steam. A late 1960s Plymouth NH factory made Birch shoe splines powered by steam from the waste wood to drive an 8’ wheel with wide belts.
Old water powered overhead belt driven mill equipment was converted to 220v 3-phase in New England states. Many were still in use 100 years after it was made.
@AbandonedAmerica very thoughtful of the windows to build up just enough grime to give lovely diffuse lighting

It's a great photo and kind of takes me back... I would have loved all those gears as a kid when I'd mess with anything that made me feel like I was on Starship Enterprise. The wooden bench reminds me of my Dad and Grandfather who were carpenters. These things span the times....
