i dunno, man. i tried real hard with Breath of the Wild, and I'm trying real hard with A Link Between Worlds. i think it's just something about the vibes: i don't want to Hang Out in zelda games. I don't think Link is interesting, beyond being a very hot character design when dressed up femme. i *want* to like these games, I *want* to be part of The Conversation, i don't want to be negative or a hater. i can tell these games are Good. but they just don't excite me.
ditto for dark souls. it makes me feel bad!! it makes me feel mean, to express my feelings about them when everyone is universally praising them!! i don't want to yuck anyone else's yums, or make them feel stupid for liking a thing that is obviously great!! but i also have to talk out my feelings to understand them better, which is the only potential path for me eventually liking these things. if i can figure out what turns me off, maybe i can get past it.
so, after watching that trailer, here's what repels me:
-the story (and this was true of botw as well) is the kind of thing that exists in tiny bursts and relies on you Already Having Fond Memories Of This Series. otherwise, you're just a guy running around a place.
-botw had really great art direction and this has pretty cool art direction but Graphically, these games sure do look 15 years old
-the world is too damn big!! too much work to do!! i already play ffxiv!!
@espercontrol I think that's a fair judgement and point of view. I feel the same way about the direction Assassin's Creed went. I really enjoyed the originals but I have zero interest in the new ones.
@espercontrol the way I think about these sorts of things is that like, even "the best game of all time" is at most going to be enjoyed by 99% of its players. With how many games there are out there, this means that statistically there are going to be a handful or so where you are in that 1% of people who just can't enjoy them.
